Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is a weekend-long event that reflects the collaboration of over fifty Hartford-area community organizations coming together for the common cause of youth civic engagement. GYSD is a unique opportunity for youth to teach and learn rewarding ways to serve their neighbors; to lead and participate in projects that address their community’s needs; and to celebrate young volunteers who make a difference on GYSD andyear-round in their community. With projects in over 100 countries and on six different continents, GYSD is the largest service event in the world! This year OPP is excited to celebrate our 10th anniversary as the Hartford region’s lead agency for GYSD! In 2011, 600 youth designed, lead, coordinated, and performed over fifty service projects impacting an estimated 20,000 residents. Here in Hartford, projects addressed issues such as hunger and homelessness, literacy, health care, and the environment. The event aims to engage young people in a variety of meaningful service experiences that have a positive impact on their community while inspiring year-round community involvement. This is a great opportunity to be involved in your community, obtain service hours to graduate, and have fun!
