OPP

Education

The cornerstone of OPP’s success is our overarching relationship centered approach for building connections with youth that last. We work with high school youth, out-of-school youth and youth enrolled in college, helping them to reach their educational and career goals.

Academic Support

OPP offers academic tutoring assistance after-school, working closely with Hartford Public Schools to support the academic progress of youth at critical transitions. Activities include:

  • Review of high school coursework for college entrance requirements
  • Tutoring through nationally-recognized programs, such as Read 180 and BrainChild
  • Assistance from a certified teacher to achieve a high school diploma online through nationally-recognized Penn Foster program
  • Preparation for SAT college entrance exam

College Planning & Retention Services

Our Piece of the Pie also provides comprehensive college and career guidance services to youth and their families. These services include:

  • College application guidance
  • Assistance with financial aid and scholarship applications
  • Regularly scheduled college tours
  • Retention services

OPP staff maintain contact with youth once they are enrolled in college, coordinate an annual job fair for Hartford college youth and area employers, and assist college youth to obtain internships, summer and part-time employment.

OPP offers a two-part integrated strategy: College Planning, and College Retention Services to help urban youth get into college and stay there.
