Peacebuilders
Violence and the threat of street violence are two of the biggest and most dangerous obstacles facing Hartford youth as they strive to become successful adults.
The Peacebuilders are working to make the road to success a safe place for the city's youth.
Our Piece of the Pie, in a partnership with the city, Compass Youth Collaborative, Hartford Communities that Care and the Village for Families and Children, focuses the program on youth between the ages of 13 to 18 who exhibit behavior that could lead them to become violent or become victims of violence. The model works to steer youth away from violence through relationships with caring adults who provide them with the necessary support.
A Street Outreach Team consisting of five Peacebuilders and one area supervisor targets neighborhoods with high incidence of violence.
The Role of the Peacebuilder:
- Youth engagement, assessment, mental health referral, crisis intervention, education and job attainment
- Works to prevent incidence of violence through mediation and engagement with teen throughout
the city
- Responds to hospitals where victims and/or suspects are transported.
- Participates in weekly case review meetings with Hartford Police and the citys
Office for Youth Service
- Collects and tracks data to meet project goals and objectives
