Hartford's Young Community Advocates

Their name says it all!

Hartford's Young Community Advocates mobilize young people to study and address crucial issues in the community.  Students collect and analyze data, and initiate campaigns to fight problems such as urban blight, teen violence and the lack of sufficient care for the elderly.

During the past year, members of this youth business have been educating Hartford elementary school students about the dangers of lead poisoning. Youth have collected data concerning the prevalence of lead paint in city housing units.  With data in hand, participants identify and educated the demographic that would be most affected: young children and their families.

Youth in Hartford's Young Community Advocates also develop teamwork, critical thinking skills, and other job readiness skills that prepare to become valuable members of the workforce.
