Scratch Batch Kids (Culinary Arts)

Something’s cooking at OPP!

It’s the Scatch Batch Kids. From baking and cooking to marketing and sales, this youth business of 14-18 year olds explores and experiences all aspects of the culinary arts world. Through a partnership with local caterer City Fare, the program prepares teens for careers in the service industry and other related business.

I used to have my mind on the street , said participant Elizabeth. With OPP I'd rather stay in this job. It keeps me focused and I get experience.

It’s a lot more than just baking cookies. Youth learn to balance the cost of ingredients so they attain the best possible profit margin at a bake sale They also learn to properly market their products and themselves to make them even more attractive to consumers.

Goals

  • Learn the basics of food preparation, nutrition, safety, catering and customer service skills
  • Prepare items for resale at OPP locations
  • Apply mathematical skills in recipe conversion
  • Develop business and marketing plans
